The Greatest Canadian

Please find links below to help you research and find information about Great/Famous Canadians. I encourage you to start with these links and the print resources that are in the class before you go wild and crazy with your searching on the internet.

A website full of links about many famous and great Canadians that has been put together by another CBE school that did a similar project.

A good place to go to find out if someone famous is Canadian. This website has small amounts of information but it is a starting point.

A link to a wikipedia page about famous Canadians. Again, I would use this is a starting point. From here you can use some of the resources for each person to help you further your research.

Online Reference Centre – Links to large databases full of information. You will need to figure out which databases you should use that will help you with your research.

Student Research Centre – This will help you find articles, photos, maps, magazines, and other media about certain topics.

The Canadian Encyclopedia – It is exactly that, The Canadian Encyclopedia.

Canada online E-Library – Similar idea to the Student Research Centre

Grolier Online Passport – This will help you find sites with information about your person.

Organizing Information

All writing requires you to organize the information that you are putting into it regardless if the information is based on your own ideas or if it is based on research. By organizing your information you will soon realize that your writing will be much more cohesive and have a better flow to it. There are many different ways of organizing information and you need to determine the best way for you to do this. Below I have provided a link that will help you with this choice by showing you a large number of different graphic organizers. Please read through the descriptions to see which one will help you organize your information.

They have also provided you with a flow chart to help you select which organizer is might be best suited for the job.

Tom Baines ENDs Statements Student Self Assessment

The Calgary Board of Education is asking teachers to now report on students’ citizenship, character, and personal development. In order to help your teachers report on this we are asking you to digitally fill out a self assessment and then email it to your teacher, provide them with a copy via a D2L drop box, or put it onto a memory stick or cd/dvd and hand it in.

You can get a copy of the file by clicking on this link. When you have the file on your computer open it and then save it as “Full Name – Homeroom.doc” An example of this is “Jeremy Lang – 7-01.doc”. If you have any questions please ask your teacher.

Researching the Italian City States

Some hints for how to research for this project:

  • Google Italian City States in general
  • Google your city state and the word Renaissance, NOT the specific thing you’re researching. So, for example, Google “Milan Renaissance” instead of “Milan government Renaissance.” The second search can be useful, but chances are you’ll get more results by searching the first way. You will need to read the resulting sites for information, and the benefit of this way of searching is that you might find information that you weren’t immediately looking for but that’s useful anyway.
  • In Google, you don’t need to include words like “in the” or “and.” Google excludes those from searches anyway.
  • You may also find some useful information by searching “Italian Renaissance.”
